Even the people were saying that digital was a big part of the media's future. But we thought it would always be ancillary, a form of expansion, not replacement. The Internet is now driving print, it the other way around. Like any professional, I want to be compensated for my work. We are not there yet. But I also want to have a voice. I live and breathe information. I am a natural gossip, an essential quality for a good reporter. I need a place to report, so I plunged in. It's vital to have a platform and a way to market your work. Blogging does that.

Several times a day I run across a story idea, tip, blog post, or event that offers up a story. There are so many stories in Chicago that are under covered or ignored. I treasure my weekly newsprint column, but it's a challenge to hit the right timing. Timing is everything in news. That's what I have learned through the blog.

KD: What have been some of the useful online search engines or applications that help you or online journalism in general?

LW: Google and Google alerts are invaluable. Follow-ups are easier.

Disadvantages: It's harder to build an audience. You have to go find the readers/viewers. With old media, the news organizations bring the eyeballs to you. You need good editors and they are in short supply in the on line world. Reader, beware. Bias and hidden agendas run rampant on the Internet.

KD: Do you find it harder to find good journalism on the Internet or easier?

LW: Good journalism is everywhere. The small tranquil part of Chicago became a dangerous place to walk alone.

Four of the robberies are all believed to be connected. In each case a male in his mid 20s was walking alone and robbed. Police are still unsure whether or not all of the robberies are connected. At least four men are believed to be behind the strong arm robberies occurring throughout Lincoln Park but no one has yet to apprehend the criminals all of whom are also thought to be in their mid 20’s.

Of all of the victims in the robberies two were brutally beaten to the point that they needed to be hospitalized.

Crime in Lincoln Park

What the FLYP is That!

Media is continuously changing, and people constantly need to be informed on what is going on in the world. An online website called FLYP Media is connecting people from all over the world together. The goal is to inform the public on what media within the United States.

FLYP allows people to discuss anything ranging from movies to Barack Obama. Each person who joins the online community is able to view and submit their own blogs, podcasts, listen to music and many more exciting features. With websites like FLYP some may ask, where is journalism going?

The answer is journalism is just evolving with the technology that distributes it. FLYP Media is one of the largest online media databases in the world. Unlike a regular magazine that one person could buy at a store, FLYP has an almost endless supply of different kind of news and media for everyone to enjoy that is continuously getting updated. Rather than hearing just one side of an argument, viewers are able to find both sides to any disagreement giving them the best chance to receive their information.

Having a large database is an advantage for people looking for information, and the quality of the information received.
